The Difference Between Sod and Hydroseeding

What is Sod?

Also known as turf, sod is mature, pre-grown grass with a root system and a thin soil layer. It is delivered in rolls and sometimes squares, and is ready to install almost immediately. Sod installation is very popular for homeowners seeking immediate results. Overall sod installation:

  • Creates an instant lawn

  • Is ready to use faster

  • Creates excellent erosion control on sloped areas

  • Works in a variety of conditions

  • Less vulnerable to wildlife

What is Hydroseeding?

Compared to sod, hydroseeding is a planting process that uses nutrient-rich grass seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water, sprayed onto prepared soil. It creates an even seed distribution process for establishing new lawns or repairing old ones, with built-in erosion protection! It contains a bright green dye that allows experts to verify that coverage is complete. Overall hydroseeding:

  • Allows seeds to germinate fast

  • Creates customizable grass blends

  • Provides an even distribution

  • Provides deeper root systems

Lawn Installation FAQs

How long does it take to install a new lawn?

It usually takes 1 day, typically, but up to 3, depending on the size

Can I walk on my new lawn immediately?

No, you must wait 4-6 weeks and have your first cut. You can walk if you have to to get across a lawn, but no heavy foot traffic.

What if my lawn has poor soil and drainage problems?

That would need to be addressed first. Poor drainage can create moss and drown the grass roots.

Do you remove old grass and weeds before installation?

Yes, old grass and weeds are removed before the installation process!

How do I know which grass is best for my lawn?

Most of the time, we use a blend. The blend allows for different tolerances under different conditions.

Can a new lawn be installed on a slope or an uneven yard?

Yes, a lawn can be installed on a slope. Sometimes, on an extreme slope, we will use a mesh to prevent erosion until the grass grows in.

How often should I fertilize my new lawn?

Usually, an established lawn will need a 4-6 step program. For a new lawn, the seed will be installed with a starter fertilizer. approx 6 weeks after install you want to use another round of starter fertilizer. Then, depending on the time of year will be how many applications you have left that season.
